Queensland Folk Art
CS Energy Gallery
6 June - 9 August 2009
About the Exhibition
To celebrate Q150, the Ipswich Art Gallery is pleased to present Queensland Folk Art. This unique exhibition surveys the skills and creativity of everyday Queenslanders since 1859. This is the first exhibition to showcase the incredible creations of artists working outside the conventions of ‘high' art.
Featuring an astonishing range of art forms, Queensland Folk Art includes distinctly Australian crafts such as emu egg carving and gum leaf painting. Many of the art forms presented are no longer practiced, such as the uniquely Queensland crafts of sewing with decoratively shaped lung fish scales and covering furniture in sea shells. The exhibition also includes many beautiful examples of quilting, needlework, embroidery, woodwork, engraving and much more.
Guided tours for students
Free guided tours for primary and secondary students are available throughout the exhibition. All tours are presented by Gallery staff. Tour duration is approximately 1 hour.
Queensland Folk Art reveals a unique identity of Queensland through folk art objects made by everyday people. The objects tell us stories about individuals; immigration; changing technologies and industries; changing attitudes to and uses of the natural environment and trends in domestic architecture and furnishings. Queensland Folk Art includes objects specific to Ipswich including an 1877 view of Ipswich by C G S Hirst and pottery items made illegitimately, for personal use, by workers in early Ipswich potteries.
The exhibition is a excellent resource for prompting discussions and investigations about Queensland, since it's formation in 1859 until the present day.
