Varnish on linen, 120 x 160 cm
Ipswich Art Gallery Collection, 2012
Although the title of this artwork is evocative of landscape, as viewers we are instead presented with an abstract image of swirling colour. Ebenezer can be understood as conveying a sensory response to the local area’s landscape, as opposed to a figurative representation. Frank has achieved this effect through pouring layers of varnish in various levels of thickness onto a horizontal canvas. As the layers are added, the artist controls the direction of the varnish flow with wedges and blocks placed beneath the painting.
