26 Feb 2018 - 23 Mar 2018

Help your students see the world in a whole new way! Ipswich Art Gallery will be home to Scale Free Network’s exciting art-science laboratory ready for your students to experience microscope drawing workshops.

The sessions combine a lesson in science, art and mathematics inspired by the microscopic world.

Students are introduced to the fascinating world of the micro-scale as they fine tune their observational skills and discover a multitude of inspiring forms while creating works of art.

In the Micro Draw workshops students can:

  • wear lab coats (which double as art smocks)
  • work independently and collaboratively
  • learn to use interactive microscopes to explore everyday objects
  • learn about the connections between science and art
  • create stunning works of art using a variety of art materials.

Using the microscopes supplied, students look at slides and live samples from different areas of scientific research such as microbiology, geology, water ecology, parasitology and botany as well as their own special objects.

The workshops begin with an introduction discussion followed by two activities: stereo microscope observation and drawing as well as individual and collaborative drawings and sculpture making.
