COING SOON — Contemporary Ipswich based artist Andy Harwood harnesses his foundation in design to execute complex, mathematically derived compositions that interrogate the mechanics of vision.

In this exhibition, Harwood investigates the concept of ‘hypervigilant light’—an illumination that functions not as a passive aesthetic element, but as an active, psychological force. Through a meticulous construction of formal elements, Harwood evokes a state of heightened somatic alertness.

Sharp, precise geometric configurations and hard edges direct the eye outward to the periphery, mimicking the frantic, scanning instinct of a nervous system on high alert. Conversely, this ocular paranoia is mediated by seamless tonal gradients that recede from light to shadow, pulling the gaze inward towards central stabilizing visual anchors.

Hypervigilant Light is an Ipswich Art Gallery exhibition.

Andy Harwood

Andy Harwood’s meticulous geometric paintings fuse mathematical precision with the neurological mechanics of perception, creating vibrant works that balance structural order with human emotion. He lives and works in Ipswich, Australia.

Harwood earned a Bachelor of Design in 2004, a formative period that instilled a rigorous and disciplined approach to composition and form. His work has received significant institutional recognition, including selection as a finalist in the Muswellbrook Art Prize at Muswellbrook Regional Gallery (2025) and the Sunshine Coast Art Prize (2021, 2024 and 2025).

Harwood is represented by Jan Manton Gallery, Brisbane.
